Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿, Miyazaki Hayao?), born 1941-01-05 in Tokyo, Japan, is a director of animated films and a co-founder of the animation studio and production company Studio Ghibli.
Miyazaki is the creator of many popular animated feature films, as well as manga. Although largely unknown in the West outside of animation communities until Miramax released his film Princess Mononoke in 1999, his films have enjoyed both commercial and critical success in Japan and East Asia. Miyazaki's Spirited Away is the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan; Princess Mononoke held the same title for a short period until the release of Titanic later in the same year.
Miyazaki's films are distinguished by recurring themes such as humanity's relationship to nature and technology, and the difficulty of maintaining a pacifist ethic. The protagonists of his films are often strong, independent girls or young women; the villains, when present, are often morally ambiguous characters and have redeeming qualities.
Miyazaki's films have generally been financially successful, and this success has invited comparisons with American animator Walt Disney. However, Miyazaki does not see himself as a person building an animation empire, but as an animator fortunate enough to have been able to make films with complete creative control. In 2006, Time magazine voted Miyazaki as one of the most influential Asians in the past 60 years.[1]
Toshio Suzuki, at a Studio Ghibli press conference on 2007-01-17, indicated that the title of the next Miyazaki film would be announced in March 2007.[2]
Miyazaki, the second of four brothers, was born in the town of Akebono-cho, part of Tokyo's Bunkyō-ku. During World War II, Miyazaki's father Katsuji was director of Miyazaki Airplane, owned by his brother (Hayao Miyazaki's uncle), which made rudders for the Zero fighter plane. During this time, Miyazaki drew airplanes and other aspects of flight, and developed a lifelong fascination with aviation which became a recurring theme in his artistic works.[3]
Miyazaki's mother was a voracious reader and an intelligent woman, who often questioned socially accepted norms. Miyazaki later said that he inherited his questioning and skeptical mind from her.
Miyazaki moved frequently throughout his childhood, in part because his mother was undergoing treatment for spinal tuberculosis from 1947 until 1955.[3] Miyazaki's film My Neighbor Totoro features a family whose mother is similarly afflicted.
Miyazaki attended Toyotama High School. In his third year there, he saw the film Hakujaden, described as "the first-ever Japanese feature length color anime",[4] and began to take an interest in animation. In order to become an animator, he had to learn to draw the human figure, because his work until that time had been limited to drawing airplanes and battleships.[4]
After high school, Miyazaki attended Gakushuin University, graduating in 1963 with degrees in political science and economics. He was a member of the "children's literature research club," said to be "the closest thing to a comics club in those days".[4]
In April 1963, Miyazaki got a job at Toei Animation, working as an in-between artist on the anime Watchdog Bow Wow (Wanwan Chushingura). He was a leader in a labor dispute soon after his arrival, and he became chief secretary of Toei's labor union in 1964.[3]
In October 1965, he married fellow animator Akemi Ota, who later left work to raise their two sons, Gorō and Keisuke. Goro is now an animator and filmmaker, as has directed Tales from Earthsea at Studio Ghibli. Keisuke is a wood artist who has created pieces for the Ghibli Museum and who made the wood engraving shown in the Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart. |

| This is an arrangement of the soundtrack from the 1997 Studio Ghibli movie, Mononoke Hime, directed by Miyazaki Hayao. Some pieces are just variations of a single melody so I either put two names or one name. As it is an arrangement, there is some filler (but barely any) and transition pieces. The quality of the sound is a little iffy to me, but I think thats because of the uploading process.

The history of the AMV Im Alive,
Ever since Studio Ghibli released Hayao Miyazaki On your Mark back in 15 July 1995 it was on my list to make an AMV, even though the anime itself was created for a music video ( by the J pop Group Ryo Aska). I had a notion that the anime would be more apreshiated and seen if an English song set the pace, either that or have someone translate and sing the song.
The 6 ½ minute Anime On Your Mark is quite simple. It appears that there has been some type of nuclear disaster in the countryside and the population has moved into a domed city. The police are launching an assault against a religious cult. Punching through the walls, the police and cultists engage in a take-no-prisoners battle with guns and explosives. Two officers routing out hidden cultists come across a strange winged being held prisoner an Angel. The two rush to revive her, before they know it their own scientist takes her away. The rest of the video is the two after feeling guilty for letting the scientist take her away. Our two heroes go and rescue her, the whole second half of the video is them breaking her out in an all out action packed escape attempt to set the girl free, on the road and then in the air. In the end the girl gains the confidence to use her wings and flys away free.
Now I dont consider myself a Céline Dion fan, even though I have used one of her songs in a amv before but the words of the song kept reminding me of the on your mark anime so after a few years I decided to go all out and have some fun With only a little over six minutes of footage to use this amv took a lot of planning ahead the hardest part was trying not to use the same footage twice. The song itself had three different versions, I tried to pick the one with the faster beat.

First of all, let me apologize to my subscribers for being so incredibly lazy the past... what 5 months?? Anyway, Im really sorry, I hope this will please you.
I worked REALLY hard on this AMV, and it took me the past few months to do this (Im such a perfectionist). So moving along to the AMV...
Oh, and before that, whats below isnt a fanfic or some made up story by me. This is an analysis of certain aspects of the movie. Ill say it now and Ill say it again, I CANNOT STAND FAN FABRICATION OF ANY KIND! Weather it be fanart or fanfiction AMVs, even lip syncing bugs me. Just stick to how the author originally wrote it and take more from a story than just "oh, let me do a (choosing random couple that makes no sense) GaaraXHinata fanart." Okay guys, now that Ive lectured you...
When I first used youtube, I looked up Spirited Away, my favorite anime. And of course I found my first Passion/Sanctuary AMV. Ever since then, I always think of this anime for this song. Now, there must be thousands of AMVs with this song, but I actually wanted to make a GOOD one :). And since the song is very climatic and almost like mystical (or something...) it goes with the aspect of Spirited Away I have always wanted to portray, the aspect of the dangerous, and ridiculous world Chihiro is THROWN into and the inner stuggles she faces.
Now, I could analyze every single clip in this AMV, no joke. However, to avoid an even longer description I wont.
Basicly, I started with the idea that I would have the theme of Water be the main aspect of this AMV, I originally wanted to title this "Spirited Away - Mizu" (Mizu=Water). Why water? Well, in many ways, I think Chihiro is like the water element (actually so am I). She is tossed carelessly into this world by her parents, Yubaba, Haku, and herself. However, she dosent seek to destroy what causes her pain, she seeks to survive beside it. Anyway, you can see this idea in the first clips of the AMV, which use a lot of the water based shots, and that theme is still used in this video. However, after creating the scenes with the falling Haku (dragon), I became more transfixed on the idea of the memory of Chihiro falling into the river. I began reflecting on the idea of such a small thing being so incredibly important, and that in the end it saves Chihiro, Haku, and her parents from total darkness. I decided to switch points of view and focus on this delacate balence between the incredibly chaotic world she shortly inhabits, and also the tranquil corner of her mind that this important memory resides in.
SO moving along, you can see that there is one effect I use repeatedly in this AMV, and that is this dark black and white effect. Not very far into the AMV I started to classify this effect as like a "dark time." This refers to that corner of Chihiros mind where her memory is hidden. This is not necesarilly a nice place, this isnt "Chihiros little world" or something. These are this girls REAL thoughts, and considering what she has to go through, they arent all pretty, including memories about what happens to the people she loves. For most of the movie, we get this sense that Chihiro just has too many thoughts in her brain about the present and what she finds scary, and its ironic that what she needs to save herself is a little memory from long ago. The black and white effect signifys these confusing, but certainly tranquil thoughts.
Whereas the rest of the AMV deals more with the pressure she is recieving from the outside, the world shes living in. What she feels inside dosent matter in respect to Yubaba turning her to coal.
You can see by the end of the AMV, and of course the end of the movie that Chihiro manages to remember that incredibly important memory. All the stuff that was previoulsy blocking her thoughts is cleared away and she continues to live on.
In conclusion, this AMV gave me a chance to look at Spirited Away from a new perspective (you can tell how seriously I take my AMVs and Anime in general XD). I continue to understand why I love this Anime so much, and why I love being an editor! |

| An interesting feature I found on my DVD for "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind".
The feature is a special made for Japanese Television telling the story of how Nausicaa was made and how it lead to the creation of Studio Ghibli.
In my honest opinion, this special is great for those who dont know a lot about Studio Ghibli aside from the Miyazaki films.
The special shows the creation of all of his movies throughout his career as well as the creation of the other Ghibli classics such as "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Whisper of the Heart".
Its definitely worth the 30 minute watch.

| Dalle profondità del mare emerge una pesciolina rossa a bordo di una medusa. Rimasta intrappolata in un barattolo di vetro, viene soccorsa e liberata da Sosuke, un bimbo di cinque anni che vive con la madre in cima alla scogliera. La gratitudine della pesciolina, che Sosuke battezzerà col nome di Ponyo, si trasforma in tenera amicizia. Lidillio viene però interrotto dallintervento di Fujimoto, padre di Ponyo e padrone-stregone dei fondali marini. Un tempo umano, Fujimoto ha lasciato la terra per lacqua prendendo in moglie la Madre del Mare. Decisa a tentare la fuga e a scegliere per sé un destino umano, Ponyo rovescia accidentalmente lelisir magico del padre, trasformandosi in una bambina e alterando la quiete del mare. Le onde furiose e i pesci giganti la condurranno fino alla casa di Sosuke, dove sarà accolta e amata. Perché il mare si ritiri e restituisca a Ponyo la sua libertà e a Sosuke la sua mamma e il suo villaggio, affondati sotto i marosi, il bambino dovrà affrontare una prova e riportare lequilibrio tra il genere umano e la natura.
Contro il riduzionismo che colpisce tutto il cinema di animazione, definito sbrigativamente dai senza anima "cartoni animati", si leva in alto e sopra e sotto la superficie del mare Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea di Hayao Miyazaki. Mai rassegnato allimpiego della tecnologia digitale, il regista nipponico "sospende" la computer graphic e restituisce la complessità salata del mare con la matita e settanta artisti che hanno disegnato a mano centosettantamila disegni. Sotto i flutti marini nasce lavventura di Ponyo, pesciolino dal volto umano e poi bambina dai capelli rossi e indisciplinati, che adora il prosciutto e ama Sosuke di un amore infantile e assoluto. Minuta e maldestra, allegra e fiduciosa verso il mondo, Ponyo è uno spirito spensierato e curioso che, muovendosi allaria aperta e in mancanza di ossigeno, congiunge il mondo del fantastico occidentale ("La Sirenetta" di H. C. Andersen) a quello giapponese del divino.
Il suo graduale uscire dalla magia e dalla protezione dellinfanzia coincide con la scoperta di un nuovo mondo in cui diventare grande e di un nuovo affetto con cui diventare grande. Come accade spesso nei film di Miyazaki, i personaggi maschili sono eccellenti compagni davventura e ammiratori entusiasti che occupano la scena allo stesso livello dei personaggi femminili. Se il corpulento aviatore di Porco Rosso sceglie di ritirarsi su unisola dellAdriatico e di smettere di appartenere al mondo degli uomini, trasformandosi in un maiale, è in quello stesso mondo che si tuffa letteralmente la pesciolina Ponyo, disponibile a credere allimpossibile fino al punto di diventare bambina.
Letà di Ponyo permette a Miyazaki di mantenere tratti spensierati e radiosi accanto al senso di minaccia causato dallo tsunami che ha annegato lo scintillare quieto del mare. Meno addolorato e oppresso di Porco Rosso, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea è una favola sulla potenza della parola data e della promessa mantenuta, sullamore, sul rapporto tra giovani e anziani, sul confronto e il rispetto degli altri. Combinando la propria identità culturale con le culture altrui, Miyazaki confeziona un film deliziosamente infantile che ha il dono di essere comprensibile senza smettere di parlare la propria lingua. Un film disegnato a matita per entrare in contatto con i personaggi e le loro emozioni, una fiaba incantevole capace di finire bene senza essere ammaestrata. Al di là delle riflessioni e del principio ecologico sotteso, di Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea resta sopra ogni cosa il piacere che produce guardarlo. |

| "Always with Me" is a song from the Japanese anime film "Spirited Away" (千と千尋の神隠し), which won an Academy Award in 2001. It was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with music composed by Joe Hisaishi. However, "Always with Me" (Itsumo Nando Demo) is composed by Yumi Kimura using lyrics written by Wakako Kaku.

Howls Moving Castle - The Way I Am |
| Since I absolutely love Howls Moving Castle (and everything else Miyazaki creates), Ive wanted to make a video using this film for a while. When I heard The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson, I thought it fit the movie really well.
The idea of this video is that as Sophie is trying to save Howl, she is thinking back to how they met and everything theyve gone through together.

Howls Moving Castle is a 2004 Japanese animated steampunk fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli and based on Diana Wynne Jones novel of the same name. Mamoru Hosoda, director of two seasons and one movie from the Digimon series, was originally selected to direct but abruptly left the project, leaving the then retired Miyazaki to take up the directors role.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 5, 2004 and was released in Japanese theaters on November 20, 2004. It went on to gross $231,710,455 worldwide, making it one of the most financially successful Japanese films in history. The film was subsequently dubbed into English by Pixars Peter Docter and distributed in North America by Walt Disney Pictures. It received a limited release in the United States and Canada beginning June 10, 2005 and was released nationwide in Australia on September 22 and in the UK the following September. |

Spirited Away Music Video - Your Song - Kate Walsh |
| It took me FOREVER to find Spirited Away clips to work with, and at first I wanted them so that I could make a video to the song "My Heart is an Apple" by Arcade Fire, but it didnt work out as well as I thought, so I searched around and decided this song would be perfect for Chihiros relationship with Haku.
The song is called "Your Song" by Kate Walsh. She has such a pretty voice, and the simple lyrics definitely fit the innocence (and cutesie-ness!) of their relationship =D
Windows Movie Maker was being an asshat the whole time I was putting this together, but I still think it turned out nicely.

I tried to make it very dreamish, so I didnt use many effects. I love this amv. By far my fave!!

Yes, I have finally gotten off my lazy butt and decided to post a new piano video.
This time, the theme to the fantastic animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, Howls Moving Castle.
I had to redo this a hundred times because my dogs kept on barking in the background. I have been working on this piece since last summer, and it is probably my most favorite piece I have ever taught myself.
Every bit of this was done completely by ear. I dont have any sheet music.
Original composition written Joe Hisaishi. A musical genius. |

Tonari no Totoro on piano / keyboard |
| This is an improvisation of Tonari no Totoro. I took my own rendition and added improv here and there to make it longer. The original song is the theme from Hayao Miyazakis famous anime of the same name. The studio that produced that is Studio Ghibli.
Unfortunately, I cannot read nor write music. I play by ear and improvisation. I have no sheet music to hand out. |

| Heres my Princess Mononoke AMV with music by Aphex Twin. The song Jynweythek Ylow (means Electronic Machine) is a beautiful song played with a prepared piano and has (in my opinion) a very vulnerable and organic/natural feel to it. Thats why I chose this song for this amv and mainly focused on the theme of nature.
